Goal Setting: Step 2 – Understand Yourself by Defining Your Values and Priorities

Hi friends!  I’m continuing to work through my next year goals in a thoughtful way.  And I’m sharing with you the process I’m going through.  Note this can be done at any time – you do NOT have to wait for a new year to do this activity.

And here’s an interesting thought for anyone with a health condition that may have changed your life in some way.  In general your core values haven’t changed.  They may have grown – for me advocacy has been added to my list, but my core values are still around family, adventure, community service, travel, financial stability, and contribution.  I’ve just added advocacy to the list.

Step 2: Define Your Values and Priorities:

When you do this activity, like the previous one, write the results down.  This is an easy step for a lot of people and maybe a first-time activity for others.  But it’s important:  Identify your core values and priorities, which represent what’s most important to you and make you, you!

Defining your values and priorities before setting goals is crucial as it provides a foundational compass, ensuring that your goals align with what truly matters to you overall as a person, fostering a sense of purpose, authenticity, and greater fulfillment in your pursuit of objectives. So basically, this is a guide for goals and makes sense to do first.  This will keep us from making goals, for example, about travel, when homelife is our value, if that makes sense.

What matters most to you in various aspects of your life, such as career, relationships, health, and personal development? Aligning your goals with your values ensures a sense of purpose. To help you get started, here’s a list of some examples of core values.  You can have as many as make sense to you, and of course, there are more that aren’t listed. I put them in alphabetical order so it wouldn’t seem like I was trying to make one seem more important than the other.
