You can tell when a woman has accepted the hand she’s been dealt and is ready to live her best life. It dawned on me on New Year’s Eve, as we welcomed 2022 in, that this has happened to me. I’m now invoking Schmezolutions instead of resolutions for this year. These are things I was already doing and already thinking about. Here are a few:
- Travel someplace I’ve never been
- Buy better quality makeup because there is more pigment in the eye shadow and it’s more brilliant
- Buy one amazing outfit a month – the kind that people stop you and give complements on
- Eat what I like and what makes me feel good
- Keep swimming and doing yoga, because I like it and I like how I feel when I do it
- Do more fun things
- Have more coffee with friends
- Support more people when they’re doing good things and moving forward
My last bullet brings up a point. My friend from the Lipedema Community, April Sluder, leads a group online, and has made an amazing journal. I’m going to grab a copy of that today and dig through it with all my heart this year, because I think it will be a good and healthy exercise. I hope you do too!
As I reflect on the last couple of years, I see that some of the things I said I’d do outside of resolutions should make their way here, for reference.
- I decided to figure out what was actually wrong with my legs, and do everything in my power to save my mobility, and I did. I’ve had three surgeries and so much occupational therapy since starting.
- I agreed to be a speaking guest on a cruise for lipedema ladies in February and June of 2023, and am making plans for it now!
- In 2020 I bought a cadillac because I wanted and deserved one, for myself.
- I planned a trip to Japan with my kids for 2023, and a cruise to Panama in fall 2023, and am now paying on them monthly.
- I put in a pool because I wanted one.
- I took classes in neuroscience, because they interested me.
- I went to Hawaii with my mom, sister, and daughter a couple of months ago because I wanted to spend more time with them. I bought myself a nice piece of jewelry as my souvenir, one that makes people ask me about it, because it’s odd and different and I liked it.
And so it goes! My resolutions will now reflect living life to the fullest instead of reframing regrets as new goals, or changes that aren’t gonna happen anyway! A new year is not a new start, it’s a continuation of where you’ve been – keep going!!!!
Happy new year – I hope this resonates with you!
